Harry Brook’s Heroics Go in Vain as New Zealand Take 1-0 Lead Over England

By Zeeshan Hussaun

Harry Brook’s brilliant century went in vain as New Zealand defeated England in the first ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Daryl Mitchell’s unbeaten 78 and Michael Bracewell’s 51 guided the hosts to victory after a strong bowling performance from Zakary Foulkes (4/41) and Jacob Duffy (3/55) had earlier dismantled England’s top order.

England’s innings started disastrously as Matt Henry struck on the very first ball, followed by quick wickets from Foulkes that left the visitors reeling at 33/5. Amidst the collapse, Brook counterattacked with an explosive 135 off 101 balls, including 11 sixes, lifting England to 223 with brief support from Jamie Overton (46) and Luke Wood (12*).

New Zealand’s chase also began poorly, losing four wickets for 66 runs as Brydon Carse struck early. However, Mitchell and Bracewell turned the game around with a composed 92-run stand, both registering fifties to steady the innings and put New Zealand in control.

Bracewell’s run-out briefly raised England’s hopes, but Mitchell remained solid while Mitchell Santner’s quick 27 finished the job. New Zealand reached the target comfortably, sealing a convincing win and taking early command of the ODI series.
